Today’s Gurus and Their Spiritual Culture

In news have been the topics of “gurus”, “swamis”, “spirituality”, and “religion” for all the wrong reasons. The alleged scandalous wrong-doings of a prominent swami have jolted our consciences and caused deep scars on our spiritual beliefs to the point of many of us even losing faith in religion, spirituality, gurus and swamis. Needless to say, the constant coverage in the media of this prominent swami and his personal life also gave us many agonizing moments or days of viewing, violating our deep trust and faith in spirituality. Close on the heels of this alleged scandalous expose, came a few more shocking exposes of alleged immoral activities of other self-styled gurus and swamis. This seemed to be the season of defamed swamis and gurus, numbing our sense with their immoral activities.

Many of us must have introspected deeply within on what has gone wrong in our society. Why is our spirituality in such shambles today? Who is to be blamed for the saddened state of affairs in our society today? Are the so-called swamis or gurus to be blamed? Or are we to be blamed for blindly patronizing these self-styled swamis and gurus, thereby directly and indirectly promoting their hidden agenda of cheating our society and robbing us of our true spirituality? Is our society slowly slipping into an immoral, non-spiritual vacuum? Is there a shortage of true spiritual teachers in society?

India, the land of Buddha, Adi Sankaracharya, Shirdi Sai Baba, Ramana Maharishi, Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansa and many more others, boasts of a rich tradition and lineage of very holy and pious true gurus, who have preached the true meaning of “spirituality”, and shown us the path to God-realization, or soul realization or self-realization. World-wide India is known for its glorious and sacred spiritual heritage. Compare this to the present proliferation of dime-a-dozen self-styled swamis and gurus practically at every street corner, offering instant solutions in the name of God for all our problems of the 21st century: health, wealth, career, marriage, good progeny, and so on. So again whom do we blame for this phenomenon of rapid growth of dubious gurus at rocket speed in our society? The blame lies at our doorstep, for collectively as a society, we have provided the space, and blindly patronized these crooks in the garb of true gurus.

So possessed are we with achieving our overwhelming materialistic ambitions that many of us rush to the nearest swami or guru for instant solutions and spot remedies without stopping to check his antecedents, integrity, credibility or genuinity. While there is no harm in seeking spiritual advice or guidance for our day-to-day problems or chronic or critical issues, but surely we need to exercise caution while seeking such a true spiritual master or guide, and not be carried away by attractive advertisements or marketing gimmicks with false spiritual guidance and tall claims.

Our ignorance and poor understanding of the differences between “spirituality” and “religion” makes it difficult for us to identify the “true Guru”, and therefore many of us fall in to the trap of bogus swamis and sadhus. Religion construes the worship of God or Gods, and includes the culture associated with it. Generally, religions are based on the philosophy and teachings of its founder cum teacher. Spirituality is essentially the philosophy of “God-realization” or “Self-realization”. Spirituality is eternal, universal, omniscient and omnipotent, and transcends all man-made limitations. Many genuine swamis and saints can preach the philosophy of religion but not the philosophy of spirituality. Only and only a TRUE GURU can teach and explain to mankind the true meaning of spirituality and how to attain self-realization. So in our minds we need to be clear whether our goal is religion or spirituality and which true swami or saint or guru can teach us what we aim to know.

We often confuse the display of religious symbols such as saffron robes, ash-smeared foreheads, long locks of hair, and so on with spirituality. No doubt these are the trademark symbols of religion, and ardent belief in these symbols is not harmful. But beware that these religious symbols are no guarantees or prescriptions to genuine spirituality. Exploiting the common man’s association of these symbols with spirituality, many unscrupulous swamis have amassed huge wealth, and conduct spirituality as flourishing individual or family businesses.

A study of our sacred spiritual literature will reveal that our “true spiritual Gurus” like Ramana Maharishi led very simple, spartan lives with absolutely no display of wealth or multiple ashrams / organizations to their credit. Nor did they have to promote or advertise their spiritual teachings like the way today’s self-styled swamis do. On the other hand, the mighty spiritual powers of our true gurus brought the world at their door steps, eager to learn the true gospel of God. Contrast this with the present culture of display of wealth and fame by the modern or new age gurus and swamis with many of them setting up corporate-style ashrams, and practicing aggressive marketing strategies through neon signs, massive hoardings, flex banners, colorful advertisements in the media and so on, to ensnare more vulnerable people in their traps. Our spiritual history is replete with examples of true Gurus who did not need these advertisement props or golden chairs or chariots or convoy of luxury vehicles to teach the real meaning of spirituality. Their sheer spiritual energy and divine light and divine love brought people to their feet. So powerful was their spiritual energy that their very silence or a mere look or glance could heal thousands. Such was their true spiritual prowess !!!!!

Our tendency to believe blindly without checking the antecedents and credibility of these self-proclaimed swamis ultimately helps in their speedy growth, making utter fools of ourselves in the bargain. So impressed and mesmerized are we with the vulgar display of wealth, religious symbols, ultra modern corporate-style ashrams with modern amenities, and long queues of devotees that we fail to ask if these swamis can deliver true spirituality like the way Shirdi Sai Baba did or Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansa did for instance. Also our mentality to “follow the herd” or “follow the crowd” in spirituality makes us assume that if a particular swami or sadhu has a massive devotee following, he or she is a powerful, genuine spiritual teach. Not necessarily this has to be true. The swami could have built his empire of huge devotee following through his sophisticated, corporate-style marketing strategies, speeches that make you spellbound, and not really through his spiritual strength. Quite often, even educated and discerning people get deceived by these false swamis.

“Guru” is the most important and powerful word in spirituality. A true Guru represents the most divine energy of the highest dimension and is “God-realized” or “Self-realized”. And that is why we call a true Guru “Bhagwan” or “God”, for truly he is the living God on earth. Such a true Guru leading the most simple and humblest of life will teach his disciples how to attain self-realization. A true Guru will not promote himself or commercialize spirituality like the way the modern self-styled swamis do. Nor will he carefully package and brand his spirituality into a fast-moving household commodity. In fact, many true Gurus have lived in our society unknown, unnoticed and their glories unsung. Many of them choose to hide their existence from mankind and yet through their divine love and energy have healed the world from several catastrophes. Even now, such true silent and hidden Gurus exist in our land.

The relationship between a true Guru and his sishiya or disciple is also a sacred one. A true Guru would choose his deserving disciples and initiate them into the nuances of spirituality. Our Guru-sishiya tradition shows that disciples lived with the Guru under the same roof to imbibe every quality and teachings of the Guru in every aspect of their lives, and thereby enhance their spiritual growth. The relationship between a true Guru and his disciple is transparent and honest with accountability and responsibility to each other. A real spiritual seeker or sishiya has a great deal of expectations from his true Guru: honesty, moral integrity, true spiritual knowledge, and the capacity to lead the way to God-realization. A genuine spiritual seeker places his Guru on a very high moral pedestal. Any slight deviation or slip from this moral pedestal will indeed totally demoralize the disciple and make him lose his faith in his Guru, to the point of even abandoning his quest for spirituality. The recent incidents of the moral downfall of a prominent swami in our society showed the violent reactions and retaliations by his disciples. The complete loss of faith in their swami and the betrayal of their trust in him prompted them to vent their anger in such an aggressive manner in the public.

A true Guru would choose only the true spiritual seeker and not the masses. He is not worried about the numbers of disciples he should acquire but the quality of true disciples.

Faith and belief in God is the very core of our existence. It is this search of God that prompts us to pursue God-men, sometimes false God-men at that. Let not the recent happenings and exposes of false swamis in our society dishearten us. Let us not lose our hope and faith in spirituality and God. Our committed and continued faith in God and true yearnings to realize Him will surely yield a true Guru. From time to time, true Gurus have made their appearances in the world, and truly we shall be blessed with the revelations of yet another true messiah or Guru in our society to lead us.

அஷ்ட திசைகளையும் தன் அன்பென்ற செங்கோலால் ஆளக்கூடியவரும்,எங்கள் இதய துடிப்புமானவரும்,எங்கள் வாழ்வானவரையும் வணங்குகிறோம்.கடந்தத் திருமுடி திருநாளிலிருந்து இந்தத் திருமுடி திருநாள் வரை நடந்த அனைத்து நிகழ்வுகளுக்கும் நன்றி கூறுகிறோம்.அவை இன்பம்,துன்பம்,வலி,சுகம் எவையாயினும் அதன் மூலம் உணர்த்தப்பட்ட பாடங்களுக்கும்,அது நிகழ்த்தப்பட்ட காரணங்களுக்கும் அனேக நன்றிகள்.சரணாகதி எனும் நீண்ட பாதையில் ஆண்டவரே நீரே எங்களோடு பயணிக்கிறீர்கள்.நாங்கள் எப்போதும் வழி தவறுகிறோம்...தடுமாறுகிறோம்...நீரே எங்கள் ஆதரவாய்,ஆதாரமாய் இருக்கிறீர்.உமது அருட்கருணையால் மட்டுமே சரணாகதி என்னும் இந்த நீண்டப் பாதையை எங்களால் தேர்ந்தெடுக்க முடிந்தது.அதில் பயணிக்க முடிந்தது.இதயத்திலிருந்து வாழ்தல் என்னும் அரியத் தத்துவத்தை எங்களால் புரிந்து கொள்ள முடிந்த்தது.ஒவ்வொரு நிகழ்வும் உமது அசைவு,ஒவ்வொருக் கணமும் உமது ஒளி,ஒவ்வொரு உயிரும் நீரே அன்றிப் பிற ஏதுமில்லை.சித்த சக்தியின் உன்னத பரிணாமத்தின் வெளிப்பாடே எமது ஆண்டவரே நீங்கள் எம்மை தேர்ந்தெடுத்தமைக்காக மிக்க நன்றி.அவ்வண்ணமே உலகில் வாழ்ந்த,வாழ்கின்ற,இனி வரப்போகின்ற அனைத்துக் குருமார்களுக்கும் எல்லாம் உமது திருவடியின் பெயரால் நன்றி தெரிவிக்கிறோம்.எங்கள் செயல்,எங்கள் உடல் மற்றும் உடமைகளை உங்கள் புனிதத் திருவடியில் சமர்ப்பிக்கிறோம்.அதை நீவிர் ஏற்றுக்கொண்டதர்க்கும் நன்றி கூறுகிறோம்.எமது விடியல்கள் உமது சூரியனால் ஆசிர்வதிக்கப்படட்டும்.எமது இரவுகள் உமது நிலவால் அமைதி அடையட்டும்.எமது எண்ணங்கள் எப்போதும் உமது தொடர்பு நிலையில் இருக்கட்டும்.ஓம் தத் சத்.

முழு நிலவு திருநாளான இந்த குரு பூர்ணிமா நாளில் தங்கள் மேன்மையான வருகைக்கு மிக்க நன்றிகளும்,வாழ்த்துகளும்.ஒவ்வொருவர் வாழ்விலும் இறைவன் குருவாக இருந்து தன் பேரறிவால் நம் செயல்களாகவும்,அதன் விளைவுகளாகவும் தன்னை வெளிப்படுத்துகிறான்.அவனுடைய வெளிப்பாடே ஞானமாகும்.நீங்கள்தான் அந்த ஞானமே.ஆகவே நாம் ஒவ்வொருவம் நமக்கு குரு நாதர்களே....புறத்தில் நீங்கள் வணங்கும் எல்லா குருமார்களும் நீங்களே...அதை உண்மையிலே நாம் அறியாதிருக்கிறோம்.அத்தகைய உறக்கம் கலைத்து நம்மை நாம் அறிய உறுதி பூணும் நாளே இந்த குரு பூர்ணிமாவாகும்.புறத்தில் நீங்கள் காணும் அனைத்து குருமார்களும் இத்தகைய உறக்கம் கலைத்து தன் உள் தன்மை என்கின்ற இறை தன்மையை உணர்ந்தவர்களே.இறை நிலை என்பது,சலனமில்லாத அமைதியான போது உணர்வு நிலையில் ஏற்படும் ஆனந்தமாகும்.இறை என்பது ஆனந்தமேயாகும்.நீங்களும் அத்தகைய ஆனந்தமே.ஆனால் நம்முடைய ஆனந்தம் என்பது புற மாற்றங்களை குறித்த கனவாகவே இருக்கிறது.அகத்தின் வெளிப்பாடெ புறம் என்ற உண்மை நமக்கு எப்போதும் கசப்பாகவே உள்ளது.ஏனெனில் அகம் எப்போதும் நிரம்பி வழிகிறது.உண்மையான ஆனந்தத்தை திருத்தி நல்வழிப்படுத்த நம் மனம் முயற்ச்சித்து நம்மை நம் இயல்பில் இருந்து வெளியேற்றுகிறது.பின் ஆனந்தம் என்பது ஆசை என்ற உரு மாற்றமாகி அதிகார அமைப்பாகவும் உங்கள் உள் நிலையில் சுமையாகவும்,சமூக அமைப்பில் சட்டங்களாகவும் உள்ளது.இந்த அடிப்படையில்தான் ஏசு பிரான் சுமைத் தூக்கி உள்ளவர்களே என்று நம்மை நமக்கு அறிமுகம் செய்து வைத்தார்.பெறும்பாலும் நாம் அதிகார அமைப்பில் இருந்து பெறுவது எப்பொதும் நமக்கு திருப்தி அளிப்பதில்லை ஏனெனில் அவை மேலும்...மேலும்...என்று நம்மை விடுவதாக இல்லை.அதனால் உண்டாகும் மகிழ்ச்சிகள்,பின் அதனை காப்பாற்றவே துன்பங்களாகி விடுகின்றன.மனித சரித்திரத்தில் இயல்பும்,அமைதியும் விலகி போய்...போருக்கு பின் அமைதி என்கின்ற பொய் அமைதியாய்....கலாச்சாரம் என்கின்ற பொய் இயல்பாய்....உருமாறி போய் விட்டது.ஒவ்வொரு மனிதனும் உண்மைக்காக ஏங்கும் நிலையும்,அதனை பயன்படுத்தி மதங்களின் பெயரால் ஏமாற்று வேலைகளும் நம்மை சூழ்ந்து ஏன் நடந்து கொண்டே இருக்கின்றன???

இதன் விடைகள் நிச்சயமாக உங்களுக்கு வெளியில் இல்லை..குருமார்கள்,மடங்கள்,புனித புத்தகங்கள் இவை எவெற்றிலும் இல்லவே இல்லை. ஏனெனில் அந்த விடை என்பது நீங்களும்....உங்கள் உடலும்..உங்கள் உணர்வுமே.....நிச்சயமாக அவற்றில்தான் உங்கள் சுயம் உள்ளது....உங்கள் உணர்வு நிலையில் இன்னும் இயல்பு உள்ளது....
ஏனெனில் நீங்கள் இன்னும் உயிரோடுதான் இருக்கிறீர்கள்.....உயிரின் கதவுகள் இன்னும் திறந்தே இருக்கிறது....அந்த கதவுகள் வழியே ஆனந்த காற்றின் ஆலாபனை...அமைதியின் அழகான ஒளி உங்கள் மேல் பாய்ந்து கொண்டெ இருக்கிறது.....உங்களுக்குள் ஒரு அறிவான குரு எந்த சூழலிலும் அழியாது இருக்கிறார்.அவரை புரிந்து கொள்ளுங்கள்.....அவரை பின்பற்றுங்கள்..
சாதரணமானவர்தன் அவர்....ஆனால் சர்வமும் அவர்தான்.....உங்கள் உடலில் அவர் எளிமையாக இருக்கிறார்....ஆனால் ஆகாயத்திலும்,பிரமாண்டத்திலும் அவர் அவராகவே இருக்கிறார்....ஆனந்தத்தில் தன்னை இருத்தி கொண்டு ஆனந்தத்தின் பாடத்தை நமது மனது மூலமாக நமது வாழ்வில் நமக்கு நடத்தி கொண்டெ இருக்கிறார்...அவரை நீங்கள் சந்திக்க நேர்ந்தால் எனது குரு வணக்கங்களை தெரிவியுங்கள்
